Antique French Drafting Set withWalnut and Brass Boulle Inlay Case

This is a wonderful, large Antique French Drafting Set in a walnut (or possibly rosewood) case with Boulle Brass Inlay on the top. Inside is a removable, blue velvet lined tray, filled with antique drafting instruments made of brass, steel, bone, and steel alloys.

Beneath the tray is a storage area with three antique wood triangles and a newer wood metric ruler. The lid is a padded, blue silk like, fabric which opens into a storage compartment for flat items and has an antique protractor made of clear, celluloid type material. The lid has a double pin latch with a working key that was with the set when we found it. It is the largest antique drafting set we have ever seen, measuring 13.75 inches long, 9.25 inches wide, and 2.5 inches wide. It weighs 4 pounds, 5 ounces.

We always look for antique drafting sets while in France. This one is by far the nicest and most elegant one we have ever found. The case is old and gorgeous.

The instruments are in great condition with a rich patina. There does appear to be some instruments that were added to the set as replacements for original pieces that may have been lost or damaged over the years. Please look at the photos closely and see what you think. It is not perfect because there is some warping on the lid and also some marring, both typical of well used boxes of this age. When we found it we expected to find the name of the maker on the key plate, names such as Tahan, Giroux, or Vervelle, but no name was on it.

On the back are the letters, "C E O, " which could have been an owner's initials but we have no information on any of the owners. Suffice it to say that they had to be financially well off to afford such a set, plus have a bit of expensive taste also. This set would be an extraordinary gift for someone in one of the professions that once used such drafting tools, an architect, engineer, or draftsman.

It is a rare and, deservedly, expensive set. It is a set to be displayed as a remembrance of what purveyors of drafting related trades once thought the very epitome of the state of the art tools in their day. We invite your questions and serious offers.
